Branding Your Brand!

Happy 4th of July! I was just reading this article on Mashable.com about branding. It intrigued me to blog, because it sums up a few of the top things I have worked hard to accomplish as an entrepreneur. If you own your own business or planning to, this is a wonderful and simplified guide to the beginnings of branding. Check out these five important steps that often get overlooked and reevaluate your business. You will be glad you did!

1. Don’t Ignore Brand Mentions

58% of Americans don’t even Google themselves, but employers and potential customers certainly will. It’s safe to say that people are already talking about you, either online or offline.

As you create your personal brand on a variety of platforms, your name will start popping up in search engines and on social networks. This can be both beneficial to your brand or harmful depending on the context. The viral nature of social networks, as well as their new ubiquity, should encourage you to start listening in on what people are saying about you.

Negative mentions will spread fast unless you keep your ear close to the web, so I recommend you setup a Google alert for your name, your company’s name, key competitors, partners, and industry buzz terms. There are many other free tools that can help you monitor your brand. You can also try Social Mention for a more complete solution to brand mentions on social networks.

2. Don’t Spread Yourself Too Thin

A future problem, which some might say is a current problem, is the volume of social networks and the amount of status updates and messages you receive each day. If you’re active on each and every social network that launches, you will start to spread yourself too thin, which can really hurt your brand. You won’t possibly be able to update all of your social profiles, as well as keep track of pictures, profile information, groups, etc. In general, you should only join the largest social networks: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, as well as those networks in your industry. As I noted in a previous Mashable post, you should reserve your full name on as many of the popular social networks as possible by using a service such as namechk.com, before someone who shares your name claims them and you’re locked out for life. But just because you have claimed your name everywhere doesn’t mean you should expend valuable time and energy maintaining a presence on every social network.

There are some websites that allow you to scale your social feeds so that one status update can automatically spread to other networks, without manually publishing content. You can use hellotxt.com or ping.fm to spread your status message to many social networks at once, including Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. You can also go to your LinkedIn profile and syndicate your tweets for your LinkedIn status update automatically or by using “#in” for each tweet (if you want to be selective). There is also a Facebook application for Twitter so you can syndicate your tweets through your Facebook profile.

3. Know Your Audience

It’s really easy to forgot who you’re connected with on social networks as they grow. You might start out with high school, college, and summer camp friends, and then add some co-workers when you start a new job. There will be a point where you’re going to have to make a strategic decision, who you accept and who you don’t. The second you add your manager or colleagues is the time when you have to rethink what you publish or what you syndicate from other social networks. One mistake could cause you trouble.

On Facebook, you may want to have a profile page for your inner circle of friends and family members and then a Facebook Fan Page for your professional image. This way, you can make your profile private and hide it from search, while having a fan page that you can point your coworkers to. They will know that you are hiding your profile but should respect your privacy, especially since you’re giving them the option to follow your fan page.

4. Limit Self-Promotion

Certainly, self-promotion is an extremely important part of building your brand because if no one knows of your achievements or the company you work for, then how are they going to do business with you? Yet, I’ve noticed that people often over-promote themselves in various ways across the web.
Successful self-promotion only works in moderation, because if you’re constantly only promoting yourself, many people will unfollow, unfriend, or block you from their network. The best way to build a strong personal brand is to promote other people, which creates goodwill and a connection, as well as distributing value based on what you have to offer: Your expertise. If you’re helping people 80 or 90% of the time, then people will be much more accepting of your self-promotional messages the other 10%. You will also start to notice that other people will promote you — and their endorsement is even stronger than your own proclamations.

5. Be Consistent

Consistency is extremely important when it comes to any kind of branding, from personal to corporate.

Selecting a unified “picture” and spreading it across all your social media — your website, your blog, your presentations, your press kits, your business cards, etc. — will build image recognition in the mind of your audience. Consistency is significant for pictures, your name, as well as the fonts, the colors and the overall message that you communicate through your online properties.

There is no question that you already have a personal brand — whether you built it yourself or not. The way to differentiate it from everyone else is through management. By paying attention to mentions of your name online, not spreading yourself too thin, knowing your audience, offering more value than self-promotion, and being consistent, you can be very successful.

LATER FOR THE TWEETS!

Alright...I have another gem for all of you! I happened upon this program online that I love. For anyone that knows me...I am a self-professed Information Diva! I love learning and the web just seems to have it all at times. There is no excuse to be "not in the know". If you are a twitterer <~~yeah, I said it! A TWITTER-ER! LOL! You will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! Read on...

Twaitter is a great application that allows you to delay your tweets. By delay, I mean, you can set tweets up ahead of time to go out anytime you want. Daily, Weekly, Monthly...whatever you choose, it is up to you.

If you are a business person, like myself, it is especially helpful! No need to sit around spending valuable time sending out repeated tweets about your business. Just sign into Twaitter.com using your Twitter ID and get started setting up your future tweets! It is really simple and once you get all of them set up, you never need to do it again, unless you need to make minor changes.

I have used a few other delayed tweet programs, but Twaitter has worked the best for me and I hope it does the same for you. Tweet on, Tweeties!

Career Divas, Moms, Social Networking PlayThangs, Women of ALL circles...This one is for YOU!

AH-HA! I knew the title would not let me down! So, you're here now...you might as well read on!

In light of the recent Tiger-gate extravagonzo...People have been shocked that I have not blogged about it yet...A few of my girls were like: 'Renee, we know YOU have something to say'...and I do...though it took me a while...here it is...

Ladies, we have to do better! A Twitter friend said recently that Women are crying out for help on the internet and I think they are right. I never really thought about it, until recently. We parade ourselves...backsides hanging out in g-strings, breasts popping out of our tops and not always because we are feeling sexy and empowered, but it is often with the hopes of gaining attention from our male counterparts. What is happening to us? Is this all we have to offer? Why are we so desperate for this type of attention? To make us feel validated? Do we have abandonment issues and grasping for a connection? Is it that our day is not complete, until we've given some random dude a reason to drag his tongue across the ground? What is this preoccupation with sex and it's addictive hold on us?

In the past few years, I have learned that this addiction is JUST like an addiction to alcohol or any other drug. It evokes the same chemical changes in the brain. That was shocking to me, since I thought it was "all mental" and you could "control it at any time." Then, I had to think...Would you give a bottle of alcohol to a friend that was suffering from alcoholism? Would you supply crack to a loved one that was a crack addict? Of course not! So, the sexually suggestive innuendo...even the ones fed to us through the media...are all a game of mind control. They feed into our addiction...It is no longer us in control! It is a high when we get our "fix" and a literal withdrawal when we don't.

This game masks itself as attraction and love...when really, we are just using each other for temporary highs...a fantasy. Ladies, we even get to the point that we don't even care if it is infatuation...we just want to be needed at any cost. I have been there at one time, so I understand.  There are no more excuses!  RISE UP!

Sisters, don't you know you are worth more than this? This sexually aggressive prowess you think is just "cool"...defaces you, dehumanizes you...you have reduced yourself to nothing more than an object for any man's pleasure. What we Women have is sacred...from the Most High! We were the ones blessed with a womb to carry and grow human life...what we have should not be shared with just anyone!  Your pictures, videos and suggestive messages become faceless...a thing to be toyed with...an object.  RISE UP!

Ladies, you never know who is lurking out on the web. Men, who are our sons...husbands...fathers...fall victim to this game everyday. You only know the online persona...the artist...the musician...the designer...the fashion guru...you only know the part of the person they want you to see. Behind that profile is a whole life that came before you, that you know nothing about, even if you think you do, from idle chatter. Somewhere we have become lost, conceited and gotten carried away...we have begun to live two different lives and it has messed us up badly!  Now, don't get me wrong Ladies...this is not all on us. It is both men and Women...we are equally guilty. It seems that our unhappiness has turned our attention to crying out for help in all the wrong places.  RISE UP!

We are Mothers, Wives and Daughters...regardless if our life is a struggle or not...We at least owe it to ourselves and our beautiful children to get the help and support we need! Our domestic abuses...father abandonment issues...tragic family deaths...we can't let these things hold us captive, in a perpetual, compulsive state of wanting to please.  Let a man appreciate you for YOU...Stop fakin' your love for whatever HE is into at the moment...No, you don't have to know the scores to ALL the football games on that day.  No, you don't have to know all the latest hip-hop albums out this week, to be in on the "cool talk".  No, you are not some ride-or-die chick just 'cause a "well-known rapper" re-tweeted your tweet.  Yes, take care of your man...fulfill his needs...but REMEMBER...he got some work to do as well!  Just sayin'!

I know we cannot control the world and it's actions, but I feel like we have sat back, far too long, waiting for the REST of the world to change. Be SEXY and TAKE CHARGE Ladies! But, do it for YOU...Not to prove and live up to any ideal of what a Woman should be!  RISE UP!!!

Stay Lovely!

Tweetings, Twitterverse...Twittsomniac!!! UGH!

The night before I travel, I can never sleep...so I write... :)

I have been on Twitter for a while now and it's been a great tool for networking and I LOVE all the folks who I have connected with on a business level. There is still one thing that bothers me though...It's the "posing" and perpetrating that I see people do. I cannot even begin to tell you how many folks I have connected with and later found out, they were not what they claimed to be. The online world is a blessing and curse! It has been one of the best things for the modern world and it has also been one of the most dangerous vehicles for hiding and ducking out on REAL life.

Don't get me wrong, I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the trash talk about the recent BET Awards, the updates on MJ's passing, the day-to-day frustrations of folks out there in Twitterville. We want to know that Joe-Schmo down the street has the same jacked up life that we do. We want to know that we have a connection with other people just like us. It's being human! So, for that reason aside from business...I still think Twitter is a pretty awesome invention.

With that said, over the past few weeks, I started to see other Twitterees with an automatic e-mail of sorts from Twittascope.com, so I decided to check it out and I signed up. I have to say, I am not much of a fortune cookie/beware the ides of March type of chic, but the daily horoscope messages have been down right ghostly! LOL! One of them REALLY spelled out what I have felt about the online world and the potential pitfalls it can provide. Maybe someone else out there needed to see this...even if you aren't a Leo, like me!

Leo - Wednesday, July 1, 2009

You must confront the angels and demons of your own imagination today. One moment you may be drawn toward a lovely person, only to discover your fantasy is quite different from the real thing. Setting boundaries is a healthy start, but you must follow through by enforcing them when encroached upon. Your positive attitude can be worth more now than anything else.
