Here is the short version of the history on these florals, as they relate to the United States. In 1912, Japan gave the USA a little over 3,000 of these blossoms to signify the growing solidarity between the two countries. Some were planted in Sakura Park (formerly Claremont Park) in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City, with the bulk sent to be planted along the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC.
This year makes 100 years that the Cherry Blossoms have been flourishing in the nation's capitol and it is truly a remarkable sight! Families, students on spring break and all walks of life can be found down by the Tidal Basin perusing the lovely trees. If you have not experienced the Cherry Blossoms in DC, you MUST put this on your to-do list! If you are in a neighboring state to the DC area, you still have about 3-4 more days that the flowers will be in peak form, so hop in your car and make it day trip! Just to note, DC is not the only city that has Cherry Blossom fests. Check out these links below for more information. What is your city doing for Cherry Blossom season?
